Letter from Huw Morgan:
September 2008
Dear Hanover Choir
I hope you've all had a lovely summer, and are ready and raring to go
with the new term! The Christmas concert promises to be a fun and
fascinating mixture of new and familiar music, including traditional
carols, three Latin motets by Carl Nielsen, and the Christmas Story by
Heinrich Schutz. I'm very excited by the lineup and can't wait to start
working with you all.
Looking ahead to the Spring Term 2009, I would like to explore music by
Michael Haydn, including his Requiem in C Minor, parts of which were
performed at his older (and more famous) brother Joseph's funeral. You
can read more about this work at:
http://www.carus-verlag.com/index.php3?BLink=KKWerk&WerkID=5329
We'll put this work alongside music by Joseph Haydn (whose bicentenary
it is next year) and also Antonio Caldara, an Italian who ended up
working in Vienna and whose music was a great influence on Michael.
For the summer, we will explore sacred and secular music by Mendelssohn
and looking ahead to the autumn of 2009 we hope to plan a joint gala
concert with the Esterhazy Singers to celebrate Joseph Haydn's
bicentenary. I'm always open to repertoire suggestions, please don't be
shy in coming forward, especially with lighter summer ideas.
I look forward to seeing you all on 18th September!
All best wishes
Huw Morgan
